Morning Browser: Independence Day edition

While you enjoy this Independence Day, please remember there will be families around you remembering the ultimate sacrifice made by loved ones for our freedoms.

The promise of a great nation rests on the shoulders of these brave families more than ever this weekend as they watch their community carry on as though we are not at war.

We are a nation at war. Make this one special and humble. Remember those who gave their life, and thank their families.

  How are you spending your 4th of July holiday? While most Americans probably slept, 1,215 Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines raised their right hands and committed to a combined 5,500 years of additional service during the largest reenlistment ceremony in the history of the American military. Beneath a large American flag which dwarfed even the enormous chandelier that Saddam Hussein had built for the Al Faw Palace, members of all services, representing all 50 states took the oath administered by Gen. David Petraeus, Commander of Multi-National Forces Iraq.

  Hey, this country is 232 years old. We've come a long way since 1776, winning over slavery and allowing women to vote. Now, we've challenges abroad and at home; some would gladly dissolve our constitution and allow us to be absorbed into a "World Community" with a fraction of our current rights and privileges. Let's not let that happen. The U.S.A. is independent and we should stay independent.

  I'm grateful for being born in America and being given the freedoms that I have to do what I wish in most cases. But if we're looking Biblically, declaring independence from Great Britain would have violated this passage of Scripture. I've never heard a justification Biblically for the American Revolution, but I can only assume that it came from the idea of freedom being given to all people and tyranny breaks God's law that all men are created equal.

  This year’s Fourth of July celebration will be a special one. The School Girl and I are headed down to W’boro. Her big brother, El Capitan, is on leave from his base in Washington state after arriving home from Iraq four weeks ago. It is also his birthday. I know it will be great celebrating the birthday of an American hero along with the birth of our great nation. It doesn’t get much better than that.
